Privacy Policy

The PREVENT Application System (PREVENT-APP) is operated by the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Prevention. We respect the privacy of our visitors. The following privacy policy establishes how PREVENT-APP will use information gathered from your visit to our site.

If You Visit the PREVENT Application System

When you browse pages of the PREVENT-APP website, certain information about your visit is collected and temporarily stored including:

  • Domain from which you access the internet
  • IP address (a unique number identifying your computer)
  • Location of IP address (city and country)
  • Operating system and web browser used during your visit
  • Date and time of your visit
  • Pages you visited
  • Address of the website that connected you to our website (e.g., google.com)

We use this information to understand usage of the website and to identify potential security threats. Our website logs do not contain information that can be used to personally identify an individual visitor who has not established an account in the PREVENT-APP. However, if you have established an account with the system, your usage of the website can be identified by your e-mail address. We may use this information to understand errors that have occurred and communicate with you to resolve problems if necessary. We do not give, sell, or transfer any such information to third parties.

Registration

Before you can apply to PREVENT or review applications, you must have registered at one of the authorized identity providers: Login.gov or the NIH Login. Personal information such as name and e-mail are collected during the registration process, and a unique login service ID is created and transmitted to PREVENT-APP upon initial log in. This personal information may be used to contact you regarding your account.

Cookies

Some pages on this website that require you to Log In, employ "cookies." A cookie is a small file that a website transfers to your computer's hard disk to allow the server to "remember" specific information about your session while you are connected. Requests to send cookies are not designed to collect information about you, but only about your "browser session." The cookies make it easier for you to use the dynamic features of our website. The cookies and the information about your session are automatically destroyed shortly after you close your browser. The information is not permanently stored on your computer. We do not collect personal information about you except as described above.

If You Apply to PREVENT

If you apply to PREVENT, you will be required to provide personal information including your name, phone number, address, as well as personal information for your co-applicants, including name, e-mail, and address. You may optionally provide your degrees and institution. Additionally, you must upload a completed PREVENT Concept Application which will contain intellectual property information. Given the sensitive nature of your application, it is important to understand who will have access to your application:

  • You will be able to access only your own application(s), and this access will be provided only during the current application cycle.
  • During this time, you will be able to privately discuss your submitted application with NCI PREVENT staff. Comments in the discussion thread will not be transmitted via e-mail. Instead, you will receive an e-mail with a link whenever a new comment is posted. On clicking the link, you will log in to view the comment.
  • NCI PREVENT staff and their contractors can access your application during the current application cycle.
  • Reviewers who are invited by NCI PREVENT staff for the current application cycle can access your application once they sign a Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality Agreement and indicate no conflicts of interest with you or your co-applicants.

If You Review PREVENT Applications

If you are invited to review applications as a member of the extramural Scientific Review Panel (SRP) or the NIH Management and Administrative Committee, you must log in to accept your invitation. As an extramural SRP member, you will be asked to sign the Conflict of Interest and the Confidentiality Agreement. Once signed, you will be given access to all applications for the current cycle for which you have no conflict of interest (COI). MAC members will be given access to all applications and must recuse themselves in case of COI. As a reviewer, you will be asked to score and comment on all applications in this cycle for which you have no COI. Given the sensitive nature of your reviews, it is important to understand who will have access to your reviews:

  • You will be able to access only your own reviews, and this access will be provided only during the current application cycle.
  • NCI PREVENT staff and their contractors can access your reviews during the current application cycle.
  • Your reviews will be discussed during review panel meetings.
  • Comments from the reviewers will be provided to the applicants in a final decision letter that they will be able to download from the website.
